Pseudodiverticulum

PSEUDODIVERTICULA

This single contrast BE shows a pseudodiverticulum of the transverse colon caused by strictures of the transverse colon on either side with normal intervening bowel that in fact is normal in size but appears relatively dilated creating an appearance of a diverticulum.  The pseudodiverticulum is caused by the segmental nature of the disease and what you are seeing are two skip lesions separated by normal bowel.  Note also in this case the involvement of the terminal ileum.  34747 Courtesy Ashley Davidoff MD

PSEUDODIVERTICULA

In this case of Crohn’s iliitis, the segmental nature of the disease has resulted in the the presence of a normal pliable loop of small bowel among the diseased loops.  The normal loop appears relatively large so the end result is that it appears like a giant among the midgets.  It is not really large and not a diverticulum and hence it is called a pseudodiverticulum.  34752 Courtesy Ashley Davidoff MD.
