RnD Introduction

Radiologists and Detectives was a game I started forty five years ago after leaving the dynamic life of clinical, bedside medicine and chose Radiology as a a profession.  After regular hospital hours I sat myself down in a dark room in front of an old fashioned  view box with cut film examples from the ACR teaching collection.  I remember asking myself, “How I am going to have a lifetime of an exciting profession sitting in a dark room all day without clinical contact?- Approach each case like a detective story” , I said to myself… and so the adventure of curiosity began

This concept was advanced when I went to my first AUR meeting at the time in 1978, and saw a poster of Sherlock Holmes quotes.   Inspired, I went home and  read all his short stories and extracted all the quotes relevant to Radiology.  Subsequently, as a resident at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital I had the good fortune of meeting a mentor Dr Maxine Jochelson who approached CT cases with a similar gamifying detective approach.  She “approached the case, you remember with an absolutely blank mind, which is always an advantage.  We had formed no theories.  We were simply there to observe and to draw inferences from our observations.”  (The Adventure of the Cardboard Box)

Curiosity

Curiosity is central to the detective concept Developing this skill – -both at the work station and outside, makes work and  life both interesting  and inspiring, providing quality care and a quality life.  Here I am 45 years later, as excited about my profession, as I was when I first started.

My Radiology Diary is an innovative educational project aimed to accommodate and facilitate  self teaching methods for medical students and radiology residents

The Diary consists of 2 major components

      1. My Radiology Diary – Personalized Diary
        • students and residents can
          • personalize and diarize their learning experience and follow their progress in fulfilling their curricular requirements
          • self teach with prepopulated selected resources including specific curriculum  resources
      2. For Radiologists and Detectives – Self Learning Tools  that promote curiosity through questioning games  in two major categories
        • medical and radiology knowledge

This year I had the good fortune of meeting some very talented students, residents and we are planting the seed for what we hope will be a unique way to advance the skill and practice of curiosity, both in the work environment and outside.

Our Program

As a start we are creating a central repository via a radiology diary that will allow interested students and residents to personalize their experience as well as contribute to the learning process  of our BMC Radiology community.
